Workshop Play

One Zone Festival-entered play will be selected by the Festivals Committee for their explorative and demonstrative value of varying theatrical styles, to participate in MAINSTAGE’s non-adjudicated “Workshop Play” component which takes place over a three day period.  The selected play gives an initial performance, is re-worked by a professional instructor and performed again in its revised form in a fascinating and instructional “before and after” process.  The workshop play dates will be July 1st to July 3rd, 2017 and will be held at Powerhouse Theatre, Vernon, B.C.  This year’s instructor will be Andrew McIlroy. Your application to be considered for the Workshop Play is confidential and will not be shared with the adjudicator in your Festival – there will be no impact on potential award selections at Festival.

Message from the Mainstage 2017 Committee

The Mainstage 2017 committee is excited to host Mainstage 2017 in Vernon, BC from June 30th to July 8th at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.

We are also pleased to announce new pricing for all Festival Zone winning productions.  The TBC Board lowered the pricing for registration.  Now, as a winning production from your Zone, there will be a flat registration fee of $72 per cast/crew member which gives you access to all shows, coffee critiques and green rooms for the whole Mainstage event.   This will cut down the club/members costs tremendously and allow your cast/crew to take in all of Mainstage at a minimal cost.  Registration information as well as ticket information will be available shortly.

By popular request the Workshop Play has returned to Mainstage! This three-day workshop is scheduled for July 1st – July 3rd. The Workshop Play will be held at the Powerhouse Theatre in Vernon and audiences are welcome.  More information will be upcoming in the next few weeks!   This is an excellent opportunity for your club to take their work to the next level! Ensure that all your cast and crew are aware of this option.  We are holding this during the long weekend for your convenience.

Since Mainstage 2017 starts during the July long weekend in the sunny Okanagan, accommodation is at a premium for the first weekend.  The committee approached various hotel/motels in the area this fall and we have blocked off 100 rooms at these locations.  We have a variety of price ranges to accommodate all.  Please check out the accommodation document for more information.  We recommend you book as soon as possible, since there is a time limit for these prices and rooms.  We are grateful for the participating hotels/motels in the area since the July long weekend in Vernon is also host to the annual Funtastic’s tournament.

Meet Katrina Dunn, Adjudicator

Our adjudicator for this year’s Mainstage is Katrina Dunn who has just stepped down as Touchstone Theatre’s Artistic Director.  Her love of Canadian Theatre and new works is perfect for this year’s celebration of all Canadian plays!  We are thrilled to have her expertise and knowledge for this year’s event.

Following each nightly performance green room parties will be held at the Vernon Curling Club… just a hop, skip and jump… or leisurely stroll… down the Performing Arts Centre’s stairs to a small bridge that Vernon Creek flows under to our amazing full bar venue!  Since TBC will be celebrating their 85th birthday we will be celebrating every decade from the 20’s to the 90’s!  So bring your best outfits, quotes and theatre history to help us celebrate our 85 years in community theatre!

For your designers, here is a link to the performance venue for clubs entering the Mainstage Festival.

There is a lot more that we are working on… Youth Workshops, the New Play Festival workshop for one winning play from our Canadian Playwriting Competition with an acting/director workshop component as well as a set and costume design component added.  Advanced Directing and Acting Workshops.

The committee has been very active and are finalizing details of workshops and pricing.  We will be sharing this information with you as soon as all Zone Festivals are finalized!

We are looking forward to seeing you at Mainstage 2017!
