Incredible Play Lineup for Mainstage 2018

Theatre BC‘s lineup of plays in this year’s Mainstage Festival is simply outstanding. Performing at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre in Vernon this summer, these plays from across the province offer a dynamic range of entertainment for all live theatre fans. Community theatre in name only, these productions are professional-level, while being produced and performed by volunteer enthusiasts.

“Collected Stories” by Donald Margulies, presented by E.C.H.O. Players (North Island Zone).

The play takes place over six years in the lives of two intensely creative women. It examines the relationship between a young devoted protégé and her Columbia University professor and mentor, an established successful writer. As they confront the line between personal privacy and artistic freedom, who is manipulating whom?

“The Best Brothers” by Daniel MacIvor, presented by Terrace Little Theatre (Skeena Zone).

Hamilton and Kyle receive the news that their mother has been tragically killed in a parade. As they prepare for her funeral, they contend with who will take her beloved dog into care.

“Calendar Girls” by Tim Firth, presented by Powerhouse Theatrical Society (Okanagan Zone).

After the death of her best friend’s husband, a lively housewife hatches a scheme to raise money for a Memorial – a calendar of some of the women from their village as models, who end up revealing more than they anticipated. Photo credit: Kelly Winston.

“Halo” by Josh MacDonald, presented by Chilliwack School of Performing Arts (CSOPA) – (Wild Card Entry, from Fraser Valley Zone)

When the image of Jesus appears on the side of a Tim Horton’s restaurant in Nately, Nova Scotia, life is forever changed. The town’s inhabitants are challenged to ask difficult questions about faith, life, and love with sometimes moving, sometimes hilarious results.

“The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble” by Beth Graham, presented by Between Shifts Theatre (North Shore Zone).

Family members, like planets, stars and dust, revolve around Bernice, the emotional centre of the family. As she reveals her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s, her adult children begin to recede, advance, and clash as they try to cope with the devastating news. Narrated by Iris, the middle child, the play moves seamlessly through the present and past, as she tries to make sense of the whirlwind of emotions of her family.

“No Exit” by Jean Paul Sartre, presented by Theatre In The Country (Fraser Valley Zone).

Three strangers are ushered into hell’s non-descript waiting room.  As they get to know each other, and learn each other’s reason for being there, they soon discover that hell may not be what they thought.

“Hand To God” by Roberts Askins, presented by Williams Lake Studio Theatre (Central Interior Zone).

After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious community of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door and most especially his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a personality all his own.

“Blackbird” by David Harrower, presented by Stage North Theatre Society (Peace River Zone).

Emotions run high when Ray receives an unexpected visit from Una at work. This encounter about their nefarious relationship unfolds, exposing these two broken people living with the consequences of their past. A story of abandonment, abuse and unconventional love.
